AMD announced on May 29 that it has acquired silicon photonics startup Enosemi, which had previously been AMD's external photonics development partner.
Regarding this move, AMD said it was an ideal acquisition to deepen its high-performance interconnect innovation, further improving the company's AI infrastructure system technology stack and immediately enhancing its ability to support and develop various photonics and co-packaged optics (CPO) solutions in next-generation AI systems.
For future AI computing clusters, replacing traditional copper cable interconnects with optical interconnects at the rack level is expected to bring higher bandwidth density and better power efficiency, achieve tighter integration between computing and networking, and support the performance and scale required for advanced AI workloads, which is an attractive way forward.
